Oh wow!

It may sound like an episode of Punk’d – but this time it’s real.

Guests at Ashton Kutcher’s 30th birthday party at the trendy New York bar Socialista are being urged to get a Hepatitis A vaccination because one of the bartenders was infected.

Among the A-listers at the Feb. 7 event: Kutcher’s wife Demi Moore, Madonna and Bruce Willis.

The bartender also worked on Feb. 8 and Feb. 11.

“We are asking these bar patrons to get this vaccination as a precautionary measure,” said Dr. Sharon Balter, medical epidemiologist at the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene.

Hepatitis A is a virus because people can pass it to each other. Hepatitis causes your liver to swell and then it stops working right. You need a healthy liver. The liver does many things to keep you alive. The liver fights infections and stops bleeding. It removes drugs and other poisons from your blood. The liver also stores energy for when you need it.

How do you get Hepatitis A?

  • eating food that has been prepared by someone with hepatitis A
  • drinking water that has been contaminated by hepatitis A (in parts of the world with poor hygiene and sanitary conditions)
