ABC has decided not to continue Ugly Betty beyond its current fourth season. The cast and crew were informed of the news Wednesday morning. The series finale will air in April.

With four episodes still left to produce, executive producer Silvio Horta said they will be able to send Ugly Betty off in style.

The news is hardly shocking: After ratings began to cool during the show’s third season, ABC moved Ugly Betty to Fridays last fall, where viewership plummeted. This season, “Betty” has averaged 5.3 million viewers, a big drop from the third season’s 8.1 million viewers.

ABC and the program’s producers, who include the actress Salma Hayek and Ben Silverman, the former NBC programming chief, said: “We’ve mutually come to the difficult decision to make this Ugly Betty’s final season, and are announcing now as we want to allow the show ample time to write a satisfying conclusion. We are extremely proud of this groundbreaking series, and felt it was important to give the fans a proper farewell.”

America Ferrera became an overnight sensation when the show launched and went on to win a Golden Globe, for best TV comedy actress, and an Emmy, for best actress in a comedy series, in 2007.

“Close, genuine female relationships are not what generally gets depicted in movies and TV shows. Like, if you’re watching The Hills or 90210, all the backstabbing shapes the way we act – you go to school, and you think your job is to find a sworn enemy and be jealous of each other. I mean, I love Blake [Lively, Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants]; she’s a wonderful friend of mine, but shows like Gossip Girl kind of condition us to be mean.”
