It was a delayed reaction to having heard her medical diagnosis – that she had breast cancer – that made Christina Applegate cry, she says.
With October being Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the Samantha Who? star, 36, spoke candidly with Oprah Winfrey on a special installment of The Oprah Winfrey Show set to air Tuesday. On it, Applegate discusses her recent radical mastectomy.
“So you just made the decision that you were gonna let both go,” Winfrey asks the actress, in reference to the decision to have both breasts removed.
“Yep. I was just gonna let them go,” says Applegate, who then says, when asked if she cried, “You know, I – at first I didn’t. And then when I met with my doctor and I told him that was my decision and he brought the surgeon in and it was like the flood gates just opened up and I – I lost it.
In terms of first receiving her diagnosis (something “you don’t want to hear … ever”), Applegate recalls the doctor’s words as, ” ‘It came back positive.’ And I just – like right now I’m sitting here shaking remembering that moment. As you guys know, you don’t think it’s gonna happen to me.”
Applegate appears on the program with Nancy Brinker, who started the Susan G. Komen Foundation, which supports breast-cancer research and is named for Nancy Brinker’s sister, who died of the disease in 1980.
As she has in the past, Applegate also spoke of her 67-year-old mother, who twice survived breast cancer and whom her daughter refers to as ” a quiet warrior.”
“She’s had it twice and there was this part of me that sort of knew that the other shoe was gonna drop,” Applegate tells Winfrey.

Fantastic news!
Christina Applegate is now 100% free of breast cancer!
The Samantha Who? star had a double mastectomy. Applegate chose to have both her breasts removed — even though an early form of cancer was only found in one — because she tested positive for the breast cancer gene, BRCA1. She did not undergo radiation or chemotherapy.
“I didn’t want to go back to the doctors every four months for testing and squishing and everything,” said the actress, who had the surgery three weeks ago. “I just wanted to kind of be rid of this whole thing for me. This was the choice that I made, and it was a tough one.”
“I’m clear,” Applegate, 36, told ABC News’ Good Morning America Tuesday. “Absolutely 100 percent clear and clean. It did not spread. They got everything out, so I’m definitely not going to die from breast cancer.”
“Sometimes I cry,” she said. “Sometimes I scream, and I get really angry and I get really into wallowing in self-pity sometimes, and I think it’s all part of healing.”
Applegate reveals she was “so mad” after being diagnosed.
“I was just shaking and – and then also immediately, I had to go into… ‘take-care-of-business-mode,’ which was … I asked them, ‘What do I do now? What – what is it that I do? I get a doctor, I get a surgeon, I get an oncologist? What do I do?”‘ she said.
When told of her diagnosis, Applegate said she, “immediately made those appointments and immediately called around for … someone to start teaching me how to live macrobiotically.”
With a family history of the disease (mom Priddy had a mastectomy and reconstructive surgery when Applegate was 7-years-old and later underwent a hysterectomy), the former Married with Children star says she began getting mammograms at the ago of 30.
Today, Christina Applegate was spotted arriving at a medical clinic to undergo treatment for breast cancer.
The “Samantha Who?” actress looked pensive as she walked into Cedars-Sinai Hospital for Women’s Cancers in Los Angeles, California.
Christina is only 36. There is a history of breast cancer in her family.
To help raise awareness, Applegate will be appearing on a one-hour television special called “Stand Up to Cancer,” set to air on ABC, NBC, and CBS on September 5th.
Our thoughts are with you, Christina.
