The New York City Medical Examiner has just determined the cause of DJ AM’s death.
His body was found August 28 in his New York apartment with a crack pipe nearby and a half bag of crack cocaine and prescription drugs in the home. The Associated Press reported that DJ AM (real name: Adam Goldstein) had six Oxycontin pills in his stomach and one undigested in his throat when he was found dead in his New York City apartment at age 36 in August. A crack pipe was also discovered nearby.
The cause of death has been ruled “acute intoxication” due to the combined effects of cocaine, oxycodone, hydrocodone (Vicodin), Ativan, Klonopin, Xanax, Benadryl and Levamisole (a drug dealers cut cocaine with).
DJ AM’s cause of death is categorized as accidental by means of substance abuse. He was 36.
MTV is still planning to (or at least wants to) air the DJ AM-hosted show Gone Too Far, an intervention-styled reality series that was shot just before AM’s death last month from a suspected drug overdose.
MTV has reportedly been in talks with AM’s family about the idea and won’t announce an airdate until his estate officially signs off on it. An MTV spokesman would only say that no final determination has been made on the show’s future.
This is just our opinion, but they might want to change the name of the show, considering AM died.
All told, DJ AM appeared in eight episodes of Gone, which was supposed to debut Oct. 5 but was indefinitely shelved after he was found dead on Aug. 28.
Even though the notion of the demon-battling AM (real name Adam Goldstein) as a tough-love, clean-and-sober consigliere confronting abusers to help them overcome their addictions might seem hypocritical, MTV has never shied away from controversy.
Well, is the show hypocritical or would it just emphasize that deadliness of a drug addiction? Or is it hoping to make some bucks off of AM’s death?
And capitalizing on dearly departed celebs is nothing new. For weeks now, Sony has been tirelessly hyping the Michael Jackson concert doc This Is It, debuting next month.

Nicole Richie is the picture of glowing pregnancy health these days, but in the past there was much speculation about her being too thin. However, Richie insists that she never had an eating disorder.
Nicole says, “In the beginning, I was known for standing next to Paris Hilton, who is the skinniest person in the world — anybody would look a little thick next to her!”
She continues, “Then, after I lost weight, I was criticized for being too skinny. You can’t win. I was never anorexic, though. I spoke to my dad [Lionel Richie] about my weight. He was concerned when he read what was being said about my health, but I kept assuring him that I always felt fine.”
In other news, Nicole has been mourning over the death of her former fiancé Adam ‘DJ AM’ Goldstein as of late. A friend told press, “She’s has a lot of guilt. She knew that Adam had suffered anxiety since the plane crash, but she didn’t know how to help. Nicole and Adam grew apart. But she still loved him. Everyone is trying to help her through it, but she just can’t stop crying. She’s horrified. She had some idea he was depressed, but she had no idea he had started doing crack again.”

With family and friends gathered around, Adam “DJ AM” Goldstein was laid to rest during a private ceremony in Los Angeles on Wednesday afternoon, September 2.

Taking place just after 3:00 PM PST, mourners including girlfriend Hayley Wood, ex-fiance Nicole Richie and good pal Travis Barker (pictured above) comforted one another over the loss of their loved one at Hillside Memorial Park and Mortuary.
Lasting only 15 minutes, the service honored the celebrity DJ, who passed away at the age of 36 this past Friday of a drug overdose.
Meanwhile, there’s a memorial set up to honor the life of DJ AM at the Hollywood Palladium at 7:00 PM tonight – with “the format of the evening to be in the style of an open 12-step meeting. Adam’s friends both from his life in recovery, as well as those from other areas of his life, are welcome.”
DJ AM’s drug addiction had spun out of control in his final days alive.
DJ AM, whose real name was Adam Goldstein, promised the day before he died to check himself into rehab. Goldstein, 36, was found dead Aug. 28 at his Manhattan apartment.
“As soon as his friends, representation and his AA sponsor learned that he relapsed, which was only a couple days before he passed away, they sprung into action to try and get him to agree to go to rehab,” his rep says.
According to investigators who spoke to Goldstein’s friends, DJ AM had recently been missing appointments and acting erratically. His West Coast manager and recovery sponsor were so concerned that they flew to New York to confront Goldstein. They say Goldstein would only let his sponsor inside his apartment – then lit up a crack pipe and popped pills in front of his horrified friend.
During the encounter, Goldstein reportedly promised his sponsor that he would check himself into a rehab clinic in California following a gig in Las Vegas on Friday night. But when it came time to leave for the flight to the gig at the Palms Casino Resort, the people who were traveling with him couldn’t get a hold of him. The worried friends directed cops to his apartment, where they found Goldstein’s lifeless body. An initial autopsy was inconclusive, but further tests are being conducted.
Goldstein’s apartment was littered with drugs including painkillers and anti-anxiety medications. Goldstein, who survived a plane crash last year, constantly asked doctors for anti-anxiety medication, his friends reportedly told investigators.

One of DJ AM’s former girlfriends, Mandy Moore, speaks about her grief over losing a true friend.
“I am absolutely heartbroken,” she said in a statement about her ex, Adam Goldstein, who was found dead in his New York City apartment on Friday at the age of 36. “For those of us lucky enough to have known him, Adam radiated a contagious exuberance for life and also personified the very definition of a true friend.”
“To say that he will be missed beyond words is an understatement,” she continued. “My heart goes out to his loved ones.”
Moore married rocker Ryan Adams in March. She and DJ AM only dated for two months in 2007. Still, they had remained close, and after he was badly burned in a September plane crash, she flew to his side. They rekindled their relationship for a brief period following the accident.
Moore, 25, wasn’t the only celebrity DJ AM dated. He had a high-profile romance with Nicole Richie — who is due to give birth to her second child with beau Joel Madden — for several years beginning in 2004. They were engaged in February 2005 but split a few months later.
Richie has not yet commented on DJ AM’s death.

More details have emerged about the death of DJ AM.
A police source says that DJ AM was found “face down” in bed Friday. The celebrity DJ, 36, was already dead upon arrival.
“He was found in his bedroom, in bed, face down,” the police source says, adding that he had no shirt but was wearing sweatpants.
“Adam ‘DJ AM’ Goldstein was found deceased this afternoon in his New York City apartment,” his rep said in a statement Friday. According to a source, a worried friend called police when he couldn’t gain entry into DJ AM’s seventh-floor New York City apartment. The fire department, police and EMS opened the door shortly after 5 p.m. EST.
Law enforcement sources directly connected with the death of DJ AM tell us that his death was the result of an accidental overdose and not a suicide — and there is a tragic, ironic twist of fate.
Sources say DJ AM, a recovering addict, developed a dependency to Xanax and other benzodiazepines (a group of drugs used to treat anxiety) as a direct result of the plane crash a year ago. We’re told AM (aka Adam Goldstein) developed a tremendous anxiety over flying — something he had to do frequently for his job. We’re told doctors began prescribing Xanax and other anti-anxiety medications to relieve his fear, but the benzos triggered a relapse into addiction. We’re told benzos are particularly dicey for recovering addicts.
Our sources say DJ AM’s relapse was “recent” — he was not abusing for a prolonged period of time before his death.
We’re also told the OD had “absolutely nothing to do with his recent breakup.”
The sources say the evidence strongly indicates cause of death will be a combination of crack cocaine and benzos.
Here is video of DJ AM in a recent interview with MTV News promoting his upcoming reality show about drug abuse. DJ AM talked about how he bought a crack pipe to show how easy it is. He said, “I bought a crack pipe … that was my drug of choice. And I walked out and I’m holding it … and then I realized after I was holding it that my palms were sweaty and I was like, ‘Wait a minute, this is not smart for me to be holding this.’”
Travis Barker, who survived a tragic plane crash with DJ AM nearly a year ago, opens up about the loss of his friend.
The Blink-182 drummer, 33, took to his Twitter account to express his feelings about the death of DJ AM.
“Don’t know how I am gonna play 2night but I am for AM. My brother is gone. I love u and miss u, I’ll never forget all the good times we had.”
Barker continued: “I’ll never forget everything we’ve been through and every time I play the drums, I’ll think of you. U were an amazing friend/DJ/human being.”
Both Barker, who suffered second, and third-degree burns after a Learjet caught fire during an aborted takeoff in South Carolina, leaving four others dead, on Sept. 19, and DJ AM (whose real name is Adam Goldstein) had said they were just thankful “to be alive” after the crash.
“Rest in peace, my brother,” Barker Tweeted. “This really fucks me up.”
The Associated Press reports that a crack pipe and prescription pills were found in DJ AM’s New York City apartment.
A law enforcement official, who spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because the investigation was ongoing, did not say which prescription medication was found.
DJ AM was found dead Friday at the age of 36.
Last year he revealed that he became addicted to drugs and had attempted suicide in his early 20s. He said he attended recovery meetings and has remained drug-free for about a decade.
“He was sober for 10 years, a friend says. “His sobriety was really important to him.”
DJ AM even began working on a new intervention-style reality show based on his experiences surviving addiction as well as surviving a tragic plane crash nearly a year ago that left four others dead.
“I have another chance,” he had said during a July interview for the MTV show, Gone Too Far. “So I have to do something better with my life this time.”
There was no evidence of foul play, and it has not yet been confirmed if DJ AM had drugs in his system when he died. The medical examiner’s office in New York City has completed the autopsy of DJ AM, but toxicology tests, which could take several weeks to complete, are needed to determine the cause of death.
“[His] death is an incredible loss to the music community, his friends, family and his fans, and to those of us who had the privilege of working with him,” an MTV spokesperson said in a statement late Friday. “MTV was honored to support him as he helped young people battle their own addiction.”
DJ AM was found dead in his New York apartment early this evening. He was 36.
Sources say he was found in his apartment at around 5:20 PM. Drug paraphernalia was found at the scene.
Sources say DJ AM had not been seen or heard from for a few days — one of his friends went to check on him, but got no response after knocking on his apartment door.
The friend called the cops, but it was the fire department who finally entered his apartment and found the body.
Prescription pill bottles were found by DJ AM’s body this afternoon. As of 7:51 PM ET, his body has not been removed from the apartment.
Back in September of 2008, DJ AM and Travis Barker survived a plane crash in South Carolina. Four people died in the crash — which was caused when the airplane aborted takeoff and then ran off the runway. DJ AM and Barker were the only survivors.
DJ AM posted his final tweet on Tuesday afternoon.

The lyric is the opening line to the famous Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five song “New York, New York.”
How eerie.

Considering what these two guys went through together, we think they will be close for the rest of their lives.
Travis Barker and DJ AM grabbed some lunch together at Toast restaurant in Los Angeles. The buddies shared a big hug before heading off.
DJ AM might have a high-profile wedding gig on the horizon – his ex-girlfriend Mandy Moore told press that she’s contemplating asking him to perform at her wedding reception when she marries Ryan Adams.
Moore revealed, “We haven’t really gotten that far. I could ask my friend Adam [DJ AM]. That could work too. [There are] many options. I haven’t even gone down that path yet.”
Very interesting!

Here areMandy Moore and DJ AM getting cozy as she hosted a night at Las Vegas’ PURE nightclub Saturday.
The pair first dated back in early 2007 and reconnected when DJ AM was in the hospital after the plane crash he was in. Moore flew to the hospital he was at for a visit. Last month the two were photographed together at a luncheon. This past weekend they were partying together.
Looks like they are definitely back on!
We really like these two together.
