It’s been almost two months since Heath Ledger’s tragic death and for the first time two of his greatest loves, Michelle Williams and Naomi Watts, are speaking about the late actor and the impact he made on their lives. In the new issue of Interview magazine, Michelle says, “For as long as I’d known him, he had bouts with insomnia. He just had too much energy,” regarding the prescription sleeping pills that were partially to blame for his accidental death. “His mind was turning, turning, turning — always turning. He had an uncontrollable energy. He buzzed. He would jump out of bed.”
Naomi laments the loss of her ex-boyfriend on a personal level, and also a professional one. “His acting was just so touching, so connected in truth. I think he was just getting started,” she says in the new issue. Michelle notes that his talent for tapping into the heart of his characters was much more closely tied to his emotions than the public thought.
“I think that the interesting thing about Heath, which maybe people have only really fully discovered in his death, his how vulnerable he was,” she says. “You can pick up on it in his performances, but it’s easy to overlook because he was so physical and beautiful and strong and masculine. But there was always that underlying sensitivity. That’s who he was.”
Also interviewed in the issue are Ellen DeGeneres, Phillip Seymour Hoffman, Sean Penn and his I’m Not There director Todd Haynes.
