Jerry Seinfeld says he was only kidding when he called a cookbook author a “wacko celebrity stalker.”
The comedian made the jab at Missy Chase Lapine last fall on the Late Show With David Letterman after Lapine had accused Seinfeld’s wife, Jessica, of plagiarizing her idea for a cookbook.
(Lapine released The Sneaky Chef: Simple Strategies for Hiding Healthy Foods in Kids’ Favorite Meals in April. Jessica Seinfeld’s Deceptively Delicious: Simple Secrets to Get Your Kids Eating Good Food hit shelves in October.)
But in papers filed Friday, the Seinfelds’ lawyers dismissed Lapine’s plagiarism allegations, stating, “The idea of sneaking healthy foods into a child’s diet is not original to your author.”
They also slammed her slander and defamation claims, saying that the comedian’s “wacko” insults were “overstatements of opinion for comic effect.”
Lapine is seeking unspecified compensatory and punitive damages.
